What To Expect if You Have a Tooth That Needs To Be Extracted

Posted .

Do you need to have one or more permanent teeth extracted? For adults, there are a variety of reasons why a tooth may need to be removed from the roots. Some of those include severe damage from tooth decay, trauma from a fall or blow to the face, or bacterial infection of the tooth pulp. Another reason may be overcrowding in the mouth from teeth that are too large, resulting in needing orthodontic treatment.

In the case of orthodontia, removing one or more teeth can give your mouth the space it needs for your remaining teeth to be aligned. Or perhaps you need problematic wisdom teeth or broken teeth removed because they are damaged or inaccessible and stuck beneath the gum line. In other cases, one or more bad teeth may be removed if you are getting chemotherapy or an organ transplant and need your mouth to be as healthy as possible.

Sedation Dentistry

The good news is removing adult teeth today is easier than ever. Our oral surgeon can extract one or more teeth on an outpatient basis. You will be made as comfortable as possible during the treatment with the help of sedation to numb the area. We offer different methods to help you relax and be comfortable during the extraction process.

Tooth Removal

A tiny incision is made in the gum tissue, so the problem tooth is exposed, and our surgeon can loosen it from its place in the bone. If needed, the tooth can be extracted in several pieces. Once the extraction is complete, we will pack the extraction site with gauze to help clot the bleeding and allow the socket to heal. If needed, you may receive stitches that will disintegrate naturally. One thing that surprises many patients is how the extraction can be done quickly. Unless there are multiple extractions, the tooth removal process typically takes around 20 minutes!

Aftercare and Healing

After your tooth extraction, you will need a ride to take you home safely. We will prescribe painkillers to keep you comfortable to manage any potential discomfort. Stay on top of your medication schedule so you can feel your best as you heal for the next few days. Follow these tips to help make healing and recovery go smoothly:

  • Follow our office’s aftercare instructions and rest easy after your surgery to maximize comfort and healing.
  • Call our team right away if you experience fever, nausea, vomiting, increased pain, or bleeding.
  • Apply a moist cloth or an ice pack to manage any swelling and inflammation.
  • Stick to liquids like smoothies and juices initially and incorporate soft foods like soups, stews, applesauce, mashed potatoes, macaroni, cheese, etc., until the blood clots dissipate and the area feels less tender.
  • No harsh spitting! Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help the sensitive areas to heal.
  • Avoid both alcohol and tobacco as both can slow down and interfere with the healing process.
